In TCM it is believed that cold can enter the body through the meridians. The ankles are an area of high traffic when it comes to the meridians, we’ve got 3 yin meridians - Spleen, Liver and Kidney as well as 3 yang meridians - Stomach, Bladder and Gall Bladder. This is a great exercise to help strengthen the arch, the posterior chain, the lateral hip and work on balance. This exercises can be used on its own or as part of your warm up. I’ve put together a 3 part progression so start where you feel the most comfortable.

Attach a band to something solid and step on the other end with just the big toe. This will help engage some of the muscles of the foot. Take a slight bend in your standing leg and brace through the core and you hinge forward - keeping your hips level.

🥇Hingeing at the hip you can use your back foot as a bit of a kick stand if your balance isn’t quite there yet.
🥈 challenge your balance a little by lifting that back leg off the ground
🥉really challenge your balance as well as strengthen the hip rotators.

I didn’t know how much my life would change after deciding to start studying Chinese Medicine in 2017. At first, I had a hard time with the simplicity of it and the seemingly ‘woo woo’ nature that a lot of my peers embraced.

But as I continued to study this ancient form of medicine and saw the positive changes it had in not only my life but those around me - I let go and opened my heart and my mind fully to this beautiful way of life.

Some days it’s just hard to get away from the desk! Whether you’re a student, working from home, an artist or a CEO here’s a nice little movement recipe you can squeeze in during your lunch break.

🔸t-spine extension - start with the foam roller at your low ribs. Work your way up the spine extended over the roller at each vertebrae.
🔸prayer stretch - great for t-spine extension and lay flexibility. Kneeling, grab a stick of any kind and plate your elbows on a chair. Take a deep breath in and on the exhale sink your chest toward the floor. Repeat 5-10 times. Bending at the elbows to increase the stretch into the arms/shoulders.
🔸Worlds greatest stretch - come into a lunge position, thread your arm under your body and then rotate open. Repeat 10-15 times each side.
🔸Bird dog - come into a quadruped position. Brace through the core as you lift opposite leg and arm off the ground. Repeat 10-15 each side.

With the cooler temps rolling in quick I’ve been using the TDP lamp more and more with my clients - not only because it helps take the chill off but because of its therapeutic benefits.

☀️ Wow, its June 21st already. This day marks the first day of summer, and I don’t know about you but I’m looking forward to some warmer days and a jump in Kootenay lake! Let’s talk a little bit about Summer in TCM terms.
.
.
🏖 Summer, the most Yang season of them all! It is Yang within Yang, meaning it’s the most expansive, bright, moving, growing and bold time of year.
.
.
🌻 Summer and the Fire element are related to the emotion of joy, the sound of laughter, the color red and multiple organs including the heart, small intestine, pericardium and San Jiao.
.
.
🌳 Spending more time outdoors being active, laughing and socializing with friends and loved ones can all help to fuel our Fire element.
.
.
❤️ The heart in TCM is where the Shen reside, which encompasses the mind and spirit - when it is in balance our memory is sharp, our mind feels calm and our spirit bright. Our sleep is sound, speech is clear and our complexion has a certain vibrancy to it.
.
.
🔥 If there is dysfunction or imbalance with the Heart or our Fire element we might see things like insomnia, palpitations, excessive red complexion, excessive sweating, irritability, anxiety, restlessness, and depression or mania.
.
.
🏃🏽‍♂️A few ways to help keep balance throughout the summer can include:
- Going to bed later in the evening and waking up earlier - taking full advantage of that yang energy.
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Consuming more yin/cooling foods (raw foods are ok at this time… in moderation of course)
- Fruits: cantaloupe, watermelon, strawberries, lemon, peaches, oranges.
- Vegetables: cucumbers, asparagus, sprouts, boy chow, spinach, cilantro, dill, mint, bean sprouts.
- Fish and seafood. Decreasing meat intake as energetically it is more warming.
- Limiting greasy, fried and hot foods, meats, and alcohol as these are more warming/yang.

⭐️ Addressing joint mechanics with banded mobilization⭐️

All you need is a small platform, a heavy resistance banded attached to something. You’ll complete 15-20 knee drives on each side paying attention to:
🥇Alignment - drive the knee forward, not letting the arch collapse, aiming for the knee over the 1st and 2nd toe.
🥈 No cheating! Heel has to stay on the ground.
🥉 Test/re-test - we always want to see if we’ve made change. So use the 5 inch test before and after performing this exercise.
